What Is Stainless Steel and Why Is It Popular?
Stainless steel is the universal name for a number of steels alloyed with chromium and known for their anti-corrosive properties. For steel to be stainless, it must contain at least 10.5% chromium. Chromium enhances corrosion resistance by forming a chromium oxide film on the steel.
While stainless steel does not stain, corrode, or rust as easily as ordinary steel, it is not completely stain-proof, hence the name stain-less. This resistance to corrosion and rust is one of the reasons that stainless steel is so popular for household appliances. Easy to clean, versatile and durable, stainless steel is also an eco-friendly material that can be melted down, recycled and re-used.
How to Clean Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is a snap to clean.
- For routine cleaning, simply use water and a soft cloth, then dry to prevent spots. Always wipe in the direction of the polish lines, never go against the “grain”.
- For deeper cleaning, use mild detergent (like dishwashing liquid) and a cloth. Rinse the surface thoroughly and towel dry to prevent spotting and stains, again always going with the polish lines or “grain in the surface”, rather that across the grain.
- To remove fingerprints, use glass cleaner or household ammonia. Rinse thoroughly and towel dry. You may also want to invest in a fingerprint-resistant finish for your appliance.
- For staining, scratching or polishing, use a stainless steel cleaner. Test in an inconspicuous spot. Rinse thoroughly and towel dry.
The Don’ts of Stainless Steel Maintenance
- Don’t use abrasive cleaners.
- Don’t forget to rinse thoroughly
- Don’t forget to towel dry.
- Don’t use chlorine bleach.
- Don’t use steel wool or brushes.
